Fallon followed Birdie in his truck, using the drive to Meg’s house to make arrangements. There would be round-the-clock care provided from here on out. A discreet security van would be parked out front in her cul-de-sac driveway in case of emergency. The pair of guards inside would monitor the area via cameras.

Other than that, he’d arranged a meal service and help with chores. He had a feeling Birdie was used to doing everything alone, on top of working two jobs. All he could hope was that she would be willing to accept the services. He’d arranged for a liver cancer specialist to visit and provide an analysis to see if everything possible was being done for her care and comfort.

By the time they pulled up to the bungalow, the van was already in place. Birdie parked and immediately started toward the vehicle. Fallon jumped out of the driver’s seat of his truck.

“Whoa there,” he said to Birdie as she marched past him. “I hired those guys to keep an eye on things.”

Birdie stopped in her tracks. She spun around. Her mouth opened and then snapped shut a couple of times like she was at a loss for words.

“I just thought you’d have more peace of mind if we had extra eyes on the place,” he said, hoping he hadn’t gone too far.

Her pulse pounded at the base of her throat, stirring a wave of thoughts he didn’t need to be thinking right now.

“Thank you,” she finally said with some effort. “I didn’t realize…and my mind went to a dark place.”

“It’s understandable after what you’ve been through,” he reassured. The shock of having a poisonous snake placed in her vehicle probably hadn’t worn off. “But that’s exactly why I thought it would be a good idea.”

“It is,” she quickly added. “It’s just going to take me a minute to get used to this.”

He gave a quick rundown of the other services he’d scheduled. Those big eyes grew wider.

“I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you for all this,” she said.

“You won’t have to,” he said. “It seems like it’s what the Marshall would have wanted.”

“I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but how would you know if the two of you weren’t close?” she asked.

“No. Not at all. In fact, I didn’t know him well at all. I saw his bad side, though,” he admitted. “Still, I regret to this day that I never got the chance to take the man out for a beer and clear the air between us. Now that he’s gone, I’ll never get the opportunity.”

“Oh,” she said. His explanation seemed to resonate. “That makes a whole lot of sense actually.”

“If Meg was important to him, maybe she can shed some light on a better side to the man than any of us back home ever saw,” he continued.

“It won’t be weird to hear about him from his mistress?” She cocked an eyebrow.

“When you put it like that…yes,” he said with a chuckle. Hearing the words spoke out loud definitely put the situation in a different light.
